Backup Exec 2012 and Oracle 8i

We have a site that is using backup Exec 2010 which preforms a file based backup of an Oracle 8i server. I am wanting to upgrade this to Backup Exec2012 and use a VM backup to complete the job. Does anyone know if taking a VM snapshot backup will cause the Oracle database to corrupt? The oracle administrator tells me that currently it does a "hot backup" of the database.

We are trying to create a DR plan so a VM snapshot would be a lot easier to have in case of DR rather than the current file based restore.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.
