Backup Exec 2014 - Agent for SQL - Backup options

我需要解决方案

Hi.

Got really lot of questions, hope someone can clarrify on this.

On my intial questions I understand we can backup to tapes directly and restore from tape directly (no staging).

We can also restore files and folders from tapes directly to the orginal server without having to restore the whole backup.

Question 1:

Automatic - Backup up transaction log if enabled and then back up database changes since the last full or incremental.

Q1.1:  As I understand you need MS SQL snapshot to be enabled and this feature is only available with MS SQL Enterprise Editions?

Q1.2: Can we store this on tape storage or disk storage in the Backup Exec 2014 server?

---> per my understanding the snapshots will be left on the local storage wherein the MS SQL DB resides.

Question 2:

Differential (block-level) - Back up database changes since the last full - use with convert to virtual machine job

Incremental (block-level) - Back up database changes since the last full or incremental - use with convert to virtual machine job

Q2.1: Do I need MS SQL snapshot to be enabled ?

Q2.2 Can we store this on tape storage or disk storage in the Backup Exec 2014 server?

Q2.3 What happens if I set this on a DB with simple recovery model ?

Question 3

My MS SQL server have multiple Databases, mix of Full and Simple Recovery model.

I understand I need to do a Full Database Backup once a week and differential backups daily.

In between differential backups I need to do Log - Back up and truncate transaction log.

Q3.3 Is there no option for Incremental Backup of the Database ? Why is there only Full, Full copy and differential backups for the database?

Q3.4 Since, there a several databases with mix recovery models, how should I approach the backups for the "log" backups?

Question 4:

For My SQL servers with Simple and Full recovery model databases, can I just do a Full backup (weekly) and Differential backups (daily)

and use MS SQL studio to backup the log files in order to truncate this.

Question 5:

Since, all my backups are on tape storage. Can I execute bare metal recovery to a different server?

Tried doing baremetal recovery with my backups on local storage. Had no problems with it. But havent tried if the backups are on tape.

Appreciate any inputs and suggestions. Been reading Appendix E, Backup and Restore chapters on Admin Guide but I end up with more questions.

Thanks,

Paul
